Film trailers-Distribution and Marketing

This trailer is a teaser trailer for the film This is England which is one of the films that channel 4 has created. Watching this trailer, it shows the USP (unique selling point) in this movie and the way the distributors are positioning the film in the marketplace, this is because it is showing you what the film is about but is not giving you the whole storyline. The distributor's show the highlights of the film and try to draw people in and the genre can be told by the trailer which would also draw people in who like that type of genre. This is England is a Drama film which is very different to the others because this film is approching a situation which not many people have done and also shows hows the situation is overcomed. The Trailer also shows how it all started with everyone being happy and cheerful and then it becomes more serious but the trailer doesn't show you how it ended.

Another point in the trailer is what messages are in the films trailer and what do they say about the film. The message in this trailer shows a story of a normal boy who has become corrupted by what people have told him, the film also shows what was going on back on in the 80's which was public and how people would celebrate it such as the Queen and music but there was also another culture which was going on which wasn't celebrated as much such as the Skinhead culture.

This is England

This is England was filmed in 2006 which was based in the 1980's, this film was to show the skinhead culture in the 80s and that black people are still having a bad time in England even though black music has been adopted by white culture.

The film is based in the 1983 a year after the Falklands war ended and the main character who is a small boy called Shaun played by Thomas Turgoose who lost his dad in the war and just lives with his mum. He meets a gang of skinheads who are not racist and get acepted into the gangs has a laugh with the gang, but he also finds a big brother in woody who is played by Joe Gilgun and has a relationship with Smell who is played by Rosamund Hanson. This all changes when Combo played by Stephen Graham comes back from prison and tries to recruit more skinheads to be racist, he gets shaun to join and shaun finds a father figure in combo. In the end Milky gets beaten up by Combo while intoxicated with Weed and nearly kills Milky. The last scene shows Shaun throwing his England flag which was given by Combo (it symbolished the friendship between Combo and Shaun)into the sea.

Analysing poster

In this blog i will be analysing the poster of This is England. I will talking about where the poster is set in, what the characters look like and what they are doing, the type of colours which are being used in it, the layout and the written text.

The title of the film and the way the title has been written can capture people's attention. The title of This Is England is near the top of the poster and has the biggest font on the poster to make it stand out. The colours of which the title is done in, red white and blue whcih are the colours of the union jack. Also the next biggest font has "Winner Best Film British independant film awards", this would also capture people because they might think if the film has won awards it much be good. Also below the title there are more awards whcih This Is England has won which would make people more interested. The main attractions and key images of the poster is the title because it is the one main thing that captures your eye. The attitude of the character is shown in the poster by them just standing about doing nothing near a council estaste, some of them also look like tugs. This tells alot about the type of charcters that will be in the film.

The main character of This is England is the youngest person there played by Thomas Turgoose, in this poster he comes across as a little tug like the other but the differents is the age and how the other people are in there 20s whereas he is still in school. He is trying to act older than he is because this group is the only place at the moment where he is fitting in. The way he is trying to fit into, is that he is a skinhead like the others in the poster and normally young boys have hair on there head whereas he don't, also he is wearing the same clothing that the other older guys are wearing although the different is that he has to get braces to keep his jeans up.

The character of Andrew Shim "Milky" in this poster is the only black person in the poster, his name is also a contrast because he is black and milk is white, they might have given him this name because they would class him as white and ignore his real colour. He is also looking a different way to everyone else which also implies that he is different to everyone that he hangs about with even though they treat him the same.

The other characters in this poster, are all very similar with the man liking like fugs with their skinhead and the type jeans and t-shirts. The women are similar too with the same hairstyles but some of them are wearing skirts and some are wearing jeans, most of them are wearing boots and the odd one out is wearing hi heels. The two women are standing the same way as eachother with the same legs up and the three women at the end are all standing the same as eachother with their arms crossed.

The other main character who is not actually on the poster is Combo who is played by Stephen Graham, he is the main tyical skinhead who get Shaun to believe in all the tyical skinhead things such as being racist, Combo thought that shaun was a younger version of him and in the poster shaun is wearing very similar clothing to what Combo wears in the film.

The colors in a poster can tell the audience about the mood of the film. In the film poster of This is England, they use red, white and blue on the titlewhich represtents the Union Jack. They used this because it shows the United Kingdom flag whcih not only represents England, but Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The natural colours such as the blue sky and the colour of the high-rised flats, the pavement and the sheets of metal they are standing infront of, shows that they are not in the richest part of the country and there is not much greenery around the area. This would be the typical council estate were gangs would of normally hung about and this was because there wasn't nothing else to do because the area is not that rich.

The layout of the poster show the main thing on the poster is the title of the film, it also show the main characters that are in their gangs although there is one character who isn't there because he is different and wants something different to most of the people in the gang. The way they are standing shows the most important characters in the middle apart from one character who isn't there, this shows that they are the ones in charge of their gang and what ever they say goes, you would also think that shaun would be near the outside of the line up, but because he is such a strong character, he is in the middle. They are all standing up which shows that even though there is more important people in the gang who make the decisions, they are still equal such as Milky who although is blakc, is treated equally.

In this Poster it says "Summer 1983. A time to stand out from the crowd" this may attract many people to go and see the film because people may be interested in the history of 1983 and what happen in them times. It also might give an insite on the type of genre This is England will be. The poster Tagline for This is England says "Stunning, Unforgettable. A work of Art" this tell us what people think of the film, this attracts more people to go see watch the film because the media is very big influence to the public and if they say something is very good then alot of people would be interested in it.

The unique selling point (USP) of This is Engalnd is that it was made by Shane Meadows who has many film such as Dead man's shoes and twenty four seven. Another USP is the amount of award that This is England has won or been nominated for.

British Film Production

This channel 4 logo was the first one ever made in 1982 to 1996.
Channel 4 became the 4 channel in 1982, there was only three channels before and so there was not much variety, the channels were BB1, BB2 and ITV.Channel 4 was very different to the other channels because they showed progammes which were cutting egde and none of the other channels have shown this before.
Channel Four started to produce British films that appealed to different types of
audiences, the first was Walter which was mad in 1982 and directed by Stephen Frears. By 1984 Channel Four had co-produced over 20 films, these films has a shot called Film on four which is now a different channel called Film4.Channel Four films include 'Ghosts', 'Venus', 'Deep Water', and 'The Last King of Scotland and the latest film which has been a big success is Slumdog Millionaire which won 8 Oscars and cost roughly £8.7 million. Channel 4 has a couple of television channels which are Film4, E4, More4 and 4Music which means they can advertise their film productions which means they dont have to pay to get it advertised. The channel also has a website which means they can also advertise their films that are in the making without any charge. There are also many other advertisments that Channel4 can do such as interview casts from the film talking about it.
